My background is in healthcare practice. For over 30 years I have interreacted with countless patients within the healthcare setting. My experience has allowed me to build a successful career and a healthy relationship with my patients.
In 2013, I underwent a major abdominal surgery and was unable to return to work for five months following the surgery. During this period of recovery, I traded my clinician hat for that of a patient. This personal health scare not only caused a lot of anxieties for me as a patient, it also made me realize that as a patient, there is a train of thought process and expected behaviours that will help promote a productive and trusting relationship with healthcare providers. It revealed to me the various fears, anxieties, and reservations that patients could present with in the healthcare settings. Not only was this a turning point for me, it was also an eye-opening moment in my professional journey.
Â
Following this health scare I took a bold stance in life which has worked incredibly to my favor in liberating me from the mixed and negative emotions which often plague many people in life’s daily attempts to genuinely connect and form meaningful relationships with others.Â
The successes of my diverse clinical experiences in various healthcare settings and productive interactions with patients and other clinicians are rooted in those innate childhood beliefs that continue to guide my daily life principles: Provide compassionate care and interact in ways that convey mindfulness, attentiveness, and human presence.
