Communication is life. Healthcare is where it begins.

I have over 30 years of experience working with patients in various healthcare settings and my work has been particularly focused on helping them build effective communication between clinicians and patients

I have been working for over 30 years as healthcare practitioner, and have communicated with hundreds of patients

This is My Story.

I can vividly recall when my dad bid me farewell as I departed my home country of Nigeria to the United States of America 30 years ago. Growing up in Nigeria, my parents provided a very close family unit and instilled a sense of belonging in my six siblings and me. However, for reasons still unbeknownst I was always an anxious child and my overwhelming incessant curiosity to unravel the intentions and thoughts behind various human behaviors did not help curb my own anxieties as a child.

It rather created a heightened state of awareness and self-imposed expectations to do everything humanly possible to assist others to feel comfortable in my presence. I observed early as a child that when I was able to assist others around me to feel comfortable, then I in turn felt comfortable around them. It was a eureka moment and simply a win-win situation.

The value of a man/woman is not measured by how many friends he/she made or by how long he/she lived but by the impact of his/her character towards a better society

My Experience

I have gathered a 30 year memory on the physics of communication within and outside the healthcare environment.  More than anything these experiences have left me with one important impression – that people are different and it’s a powerful gift to embrace this diversity. In it lies the essence of genuine heart to heart communication.

I signed on to become a nurses’ assistant and in a Brooklyn subacute facility, I encountered the first series of events that reaffirmed my lifelong commitment to aid patients and healthcare providers to reduce anxieties and build trust in healthcare settings. I realized that as a nurses’ assistant I was able to interact easily with patients but as I later advanced in my career to become a licensed practical nurse, a registered nurse, and currently a family nurse practitioner, conversations with patient became more strained. This discovery led me to put on my thinking cap once again and attempt to unravel a series of WHY’s. Why are we reserved? Why do we feel reserved and thus find it difficult to openly interact with others? Why is it difficult for some to attain the motivation and discipline which is needed to overcome existing reservations about others?
