I can vividly recall when my dad bid me farewell as I departed my home country of Nigeria to the United States of America 30 years ago. Growing up in Nigeria, my parents provided a very close family unit and instilled a sense of belonging in my six siblings and me. However, for reasons still unbeknownst I was always an anxious child and my overwhelming incessant curiosity to unravel the intentions and thoughts behind various human behaviors did not help curb my own anxieties as a child.

It rather created a heightened state of awareness and self-imposed expectations to do everything humanly possible to assist others to feel comfortable in my presence. I observed early as a child that when I was able to assist others around me to feel comfortable, then I in turn felt comfortable around them. It was a eureka moment and simply a win-win situation.

Emboldened by this practice, it was not a surprise that people easily gravitated towards me and I yearned for a future profession that offered me the opportunity to care for people in some form or another.

So at the age of 15 years old it was surprising for me to enroll in the department of computer science at the University of Nigeria Nsukka from where I graduated with a bachelor of science degree at age of 19 years old.

Below you can explore some of the key events and experiences that shaped the person I am today.

I hope my mission inspires you to keep pursuing your own.

Early Years in the US

With my mum and dad in 1997

Following my graduation in 1990 I migrated to the United States of America and arrived to Brooklyn New York with much joy and anticipation for making a difference in the world of information technology. A few months later my buried inner desire for a caregiver profession resurfaced and I abandoned my search for a profession in the IT field and embarked on a journey to explore what contributions I could make in the healthcare field.

My Moment of Discovery

Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing, Brooklyn N.Y graduates 🎓 of 1996

I signed on to become in nurses’ assistant and in a Brooklyn subacute facility, I encountered the first series of events that reaffirmed my lifelong commitment to aid patients and healthcare providers to reduce anxieties and build trust in healthcare settings. I realized that as a nurses’ assistant I was able to interact easily with patients but as I later advanced in my career to become a licensed practical nurse, a registered nurse, and currently a family nurse practitioner, conversations with patient became more strained. This discovery led me to put on my thinking cap once again and attempt to unravel a series of WHY’s. Why are we reserved? Why do we feel reserved and thus find it difficult to openly interact with others? Why is it difficult for some to attain the motivation and discipline which is needed to overcome existing reservations about others?

I have had a taste of both Worlds

In hospital 2013

Selfie after work April 2021

In 2013, I underwent a major abdominal surgery and was unable to return to work for five months following the surgery. During this period of recovery, I traded my clinician hat for that of a patient. This personal health scare not only caused a lot of anxieties for me as a patient, it also made me realize that as a patient, there is a train of thought process and expected behaviors that will help promote a productive and trusting relationship with healthcare providers. It revealed to me the various fears, anxieties, and reservations that patients could present with in the healthcare settings. Not only was this a turning point for me, it was also an eye-opening moment in my professional journey.

Following this health scare I took a bold stance in life which has worked incredibly to my favor in liberating me from the mixed and negative emotions which often plague many people in life’s daily attempts to genuinely connect and form meaningful relationships with others.

The successes of my diverse clinical experiences in various healthcare settings and productive interactions with patients and other clinicians are rooted in those innate childhood beliefs that continue to guide my daily life principles: Provide compassionate care and interact in ways that convey mindfulness, attentiveness, and human presence.

I have had 30 years of experience in working with patients in a healthcare setting and my work has been particularly focused on helping them build effective communication between clinicians and patients

My Experience

I have gathered a 30-year memory on the physics of communication within and outside the healthcare environment.  More than anything these experiences have left me with one important impression – that people are different and it’s a powerful gift to embrace this diversity. In it lies the essence of genuine heart to heart communication.
